Outstanding Service Award – Steve & Mary Moen
The Moen family went to Washington, D.C. this past summer to participate in a U.S. Senate Sub-Committee hearing on children’s health that focused on autism research and the environment. At the hearing, Mary testified about her son’s diagnosis and treatment, and the effects of autism on her family. Her mission was to make government officials aware of the importance of research in this area.
Mary is also an active participant on the Fraser Autism Advisory Committee. This group guides the improvement and expansion of autism services at Fraser. It is extremely helpful to get parents’ perspectives when developing and implementing new services because families see the effects first hand.
Dr. Steve Moen has been making efforts to creatively make changes at a local, state and national level. Dr. Moen is an orthopedic surgeon who heard about an implant recovery/recycling program in Europe and wanted to implement it in the U.S. What resulted was the Fraser Implant Recycling Program. This program collects cobalt-chromium implants after individuals are cremated. The money generated from recycling the cobalt chromium goes to Fraser. Dr. Moen has been instrumental in connecting Fraser with the three largest crematoriums in the state of Minnesota along with a metal recycling company. The Fraser Implant Recycling Program has generated nearly $10,000 in 2010 and is predicted to grow.
Together Steve and Mary Moen have demonstrated a willingness to think outside the box and bring new ideas, and are dedicated to Fraser and the special needs community. “Fraser is thankful to have such dedication from parents.”
Fraser is a Minnesota nonprofit with a nationally renowned reputation, serving children and adults with special needs. Fraser is Minnesota’s largest and most experienced provider of autism services.
