2016 Champion for Change Award Recipients

Last fall at MACMH’s annual fundraising gala, we recognized three teenagers for their advocacy and commitment to advancing children’s mental health in their communities and schools. Below are the three recipients of our first Champion for Change Award!

 

Tiaryn Daniels, 18, Park Center High School
Tiaryn Daniels is in her 5th year serving on the Minnesota Youth Council. She serves on the Education Committee, which advises the Commissioner of Education on issues involving schools, like suspensions and in-school policing. Of the many projects Tiaryn’s been a part of while serving on the council, she is proud of her role in partnering with the Minnesota Department of Education’s School Safety Technical Assistance Center to implement bullying prevention and intervention strategies in Minnesota schools.

 

thomas-kogler-2Thomas Kogler, 17, Capitol View High School
Thomas Kogler acts as a mentor to special education students at four middle school programs in the Twin Cities. During sessions with a social worker, he assists the middle-schoolers with de-escalation and other coping skills, and acts as a role model during art and physical eduation classes. Because Thomas is also in special education, his social worker said the students are better able to relate to him and have formed strong, meaningful friendships with him.

 

bharat-headshot-2Bharat Pulgam, 17, Wayzata High School
Bharat Pulgam started a nonprofit called Helping Every at Risk Teen (HEART) in 2014 when two students at his high school committed suicide. The organization serves to bridge the gap between students and administration in an effort to break the stigma surrounding mental health. They hold an annual wellness week at their high school, host roundtable discussions during lunch and hold other events during the year. In just 2 years, they’ve grown from 6 to 55 members, with a combination of students and community members participating.
