Defenders Of Clearview School

Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is divided into four “missions,” interactive sessions that help students understand different aspects of bullying and bullying prevention.

Each mission begins with a Confidential Information Briefing that gives background information on the characters.  There are also links in the margins to review the super powers and descriptions of both the Defenders and the Bullies involved in the mission.

Mission 1:
What is Teasing?

Students learn the difference between fun, silly teasing, hurtful teasing, and oops teasing (teasing which is meant to be fun but hurts someone’s feelings).  Two of the Defenders, Brilliant Bystander and Moodcaster, explain the difference.

Students are then asked to read three comic panels and select the one that shows hurtful teasing.

Mission 2:
Tattling vs. Reporting

Beacon explains the difference between tattling and reporting.

Students are then asked to read a set of two comic panels and pick which contains bullying behavior that needs to be reported.

There are three sets of panels.

Some of the sets require students to be able to distinguish between bullying behavior that needs to be reported and behavior that, while naughty, does not need to be reported.

Mission 3:
Stand Up for Yourself
Stand Up for Others

In this mission, Sonic Stop-It explains how being clear and assertive is the best way to handle a bully.

Students then read a comic panel in which someone is being bullied and are asked to pick the clear and assertive choice from a list of three options.

There are two different bullying scenarios.

Mission 4
What Happens Next?
Choices Have Consequences

Captain In Control explains that we can’t always control what happens to us, but we do get to decide how we deal with tricky situations—and few situations are as tricky as bullying.

In this mission, students read a comic book page about a bullying situation and then choose the action for Captain In Control to make that he can be proud of and that will keep everyone safe.

Conclusion
Become a Defender!

Students are invited to become Defenders at their school by taking the Defenders Oath.

Students then create their own character using the Design a Defender Page. Star Power, who can turn a person’s natural ability into a super power, then invites students to choose an interest – academic, creative, social, academic, or outdoorsy.  Each option has suggestions of potential powers.
