Fidgety Fairy Tales

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast

Topic

Autism Spectrum Disorders

While ASD covers a wide range of symptoms, this story focuses on these common struggles:

  • Difficulty with social skills
  • Rigidity around routines
  • Isolation

Message that Builds Empathy

Someone with autism may have difficulty communicating with others.  By being understanding and supportive, you might find a great new friend.

Synopsis

The Beast has autism.  Talking to others is difficult for him, so he isolates himself in his castle.  When Beauty begins delivering his lunch from local cafe, he wishes he wasn’t so awkward with conversation.  The magical critters carved in the castle’s woodwork help him practice his social skills.

This script was created with suggestions and insights from two social skills classes at Lionsgate Academy, a school for teens on the autism spectrum.

Script Excerpt

BEAST
Beauty, I am happy to see you.

BEAUTY
You are?  I thought you were mad at me the other day.

BEAST
Sorry about that.  Sometimes I can’t tell how my words sound to others.  Did I frighten you?

BEAUTY
You did, but thanks for explaining.  Now that I know, I don’t think you’re scary at all.  Your big beast voice is actually kinda cool.  Say “Beauty is awesome!”

BEAST
(in a gruff and angry sounding roar) Beauty…is…AWESOME!

(They laugh.)

BEAUTY
You’re fun.   Here is your dinner.

BEAST
Thanks.  Uh…wait.  This isn’t right.  I always get a chocolate crepe.  This is a strawberry crepe.

BEAUTY
Really?

BEAST
Clearly you need more training as a delivery person if you can’t tell a chocolate crepe from a strawberry crepe.

BEAUTY
I’m sorry.

BEAST
Or perhaps you have poor eyesight.  Have you had your eyes checked lately…

BEAUTY
I said I’m sorry!

BEAST
…because then you probably shouldn’t ride that delivery bike.  You could run right off the road and end up dead in the ditch.

BEAUTY
It was just a mistake.  Why are you being so mean?

NARRATOR
Sometime people with autism say things that offend others, even though they don’t mean to.  Beauty thought that Beast was picking on her, when in fact Beast was truly trying to figure out how this mistake could have happened.  He was really worried about Beauty.
