MACMH Offers Workshops to Underserved Areas
To reach people who don’t have access to information about how to advocate for their children, MACMH has been taking its workshops and trainings to some less-than-traditional locations. In partnership with the Amherst H. Wilder’s ROOF Project, MACMH is presenting workshops in transitional housing locations and homeless shelters to help parents better understand special education policies and procedures.
During the upcoming year, MACMH trainers will also reach beyond the metro area and present similar workshops in out-state Minnesota. The first such training was held in Crookston.

Crookston Workshop
In Crookston, MACMH hosted a free workshop for parents of adolescent children with mental health disorders who are in the process of transitioning from school. “Transition—From School to Work and the Community” was presented by Linda Bonney and Sandy Moore, both are legal advocates for the Minnesota Disability Law Center (MDLC). During their 20 years at MDLC, Bonney and Moore have addressed transition issues from a variety of angles, and both advocates have excellent reputations for understanding the legal rights of youth who have mental health disorders. Bonney and Moore have also worked to develop effective advocacy strategies: Linda specializes in school advocacy and Sandy specializes in county service advocacy.

During the workshop, Bonney and Moore worked with several parent-students teams to help them better understand the transition issues for students who receive special education services and to develop advocacy strategies to help when a child is transitioning from school to work.

This initiative is made possible with federal funds awarded to the Minnesota Department of Education through the grant entitled, Special Education—Grants to States, CFDA 84.027A.
