Healthy Body Image: Teaching Kids to Eat and Love Their Bodies Too! by Kathy J. Kater. 2nd Edition. National Eating Disorders Association, Seattle, 2005.
This revised curriculum for students in grades 4-6 "was developed to prevent or reduce the influence of insidious risk factors that diminish the body esteem, well-being, and health of the vast majority of children today, regardless of size." Kater, a local therapist and presenter at MACMH trainings, urges all educators to become familiar with the book's message so that students are exposed to a consistent set of messages about body image, weight, nutrition, fitness, and eating. Short-sighted solutions, she warns, can only lead to new problems. Lesson plans cover a wide range of topics: how Western culture presents unrealistic body images, how we look vs our other characteristics, the genetic influence on looks, the media and body image, hunger and eating, healthy eating and physical activity, and choosing role models.
Copies may be ordered from the National Eating Disorders Association at 603 Stewart Street, Suite 803, Seattle, WA 98101, or at the NEDA website.
