Unlocking the Mysteries of Children's Mental Health: An Introduction for Future Teachers

MACMH produces a variety of publications that help parents and professionals better understand the importance of children’s mental health. We are especially excited to introduce our newest publication, "The Defenders of Clearview School," an interactive web-based bully prevention curriculum for grades K–6. The curriculum features a very interesting cast of characters–both superheroes and bullies–who find themselves in a variety of tricky situations that require nonviolent solutions. The curriculum addresses the following issues:

• The difference between HURTFUL and FUN, SILLY TEASING
• The difference between TATTLING and REPORTING
• How to USE YOUR WORDS when facing a bully
• Making SAFE CHOICES when being bullied
• Ways to RESPOND to different types of bullies.

The curriculum is currently available online at no cost or on CD (for those times when you aren't able to access the Internet). To order CDs, please download the order form.

These handsomely illustrated note cards were developed from original art featured in the premiere issue of Open•Up magazine. Created by Minnesota youth, each card includes a poignant and compelling statement by the young artists describing how art helps them express their thoughts and feelings.

An Educator's Guide to Children's Mental Health
Previously titled A Teacher's Guide to Children's Mental Health, this book equips educators with the tools they need to reach all students. It includes sections on what you may see if a student has a mental health disorder, how mental health disorders and medications affect student performance, and how to best form partnerships with parents. The Guide also includes fact sheets on 15 common childhood mental health disorders. The fact sheets describe the disorders, list the common symptoms and behaviors, and give appropriate classroom strategies and accommodations.

Guide to Early Childhood Mental Health
This guide examines the common, everyday concerns that caregivers address (such as aggressive behavior, eating, and temper tantrums), and provides detailed information about what to do when a child might be exhibiting symptoms of a mental health problem. Although written primarily for early childhood care providers, parents and other caregivers may also find it useful, especially the "Common Concerns" sections and the 10 fact sheets that describe the most common mental health disorders of early childhood

Separating Myth from Fact
It's sometimes difficult to know the truth about mental health because there are so many myths about mental illness. This booklet separates the myths from the facts and is meant for children to share with their families.

Super Me: A Campaign to End Hurtful Teasing
SuperMe has joined forces with Brilliant Bystander, Sonic Stop-It, and Beacon to combat hurtful teasing and bullying in the classroom! Short stories, coloring pages, and classroom activities provide ways to get students thinking, drawing, and writing about non-violent ways to handle hurtful teasing and bullying. The colorful bulletin board display featuring the Super Me Team is a visual daily reminder that we all have the power to end hurtful teasing and bullying.

Early Childhood Mental Health Fact SheetsThe disorder-specific fact sheets offer a clear and concise description of 10 mental health disorders that may occur during the early childhood years. They list the most common symptoms and behaviors associated with the disorders, describe the symptoms, and provide suggestions for effective strategies and accommodations. The parenting topics fact sheets (there are 20 in all) discuss such concerns as temper tantrums, toileting, temperament, and what to do if you are concerned about your child's mental health development.

Family Outcomes Training MaterialsThe following workbook, storybook, online training, and PowerPoint presentation were used in the statewide "Strategies for Developing Family-Directed Outcomes" training, which was funded by the Minnesota Department of Education. You are welcome to download and use all the of the materials. 

The "Strategies for Developing Family-Directed Outcomes" workbook is designed to give early intervention service providers several tools to help them develop successful family outcomes, which will in turn increase the number of families participating in Part C who report that early intervention services helped them to effectively communicate their children's needs, know their rights, and help their children develop and learn.

"The Gift That Is My Child" storybook is a wonderful tool to use with families (available in English and Spanish).  The storybook allows families to journal about their child, their family, their strengths, and their questions.  The storybook offers a starting point for developing family-directed family outcomes.

The "Strategies for Developing Family-Directed Outcomes" PowerPoint presentation includes 84 slides that follow the content in the workbook. The "Writing Family Outcomes" handout covers basic language for writing an outcome. When used in the statewide trainings, this content took about 4-6 hours to convey (depending on the number of questions and level of discussion).

The "Strategies for Developing Family-Directed Outcomes" online training is a brief overview of the content presented at the 4-hour workshops.
